Become An Animal Chaplain!

Do you love animals?  Are you spiritually minded, and eager to serve others?

Animal Chaplains are needed to serve animals and the people who love them.  Interfaith Animal Chaplains provide an array of services to the community, including pet loss grief support, memorial services, prayer for animals who are sick or injured, being present at a clinic to comfort the bereaved, and holding hands (and hearts) during surgery or euthanasia.  Animal Chaplains can also deliver guest sermons on the bond between animals and humans, and offer spiritual education and guidance regarding our responsibilities as human beings toward the other creatures of the Earth.  Some Animal Chaplains visit nursing homes and hospitals with therapeutic animal assistants, while others may lead religious services where well-behaved pets are welcome.  Still others run animal shelters, animal rescue organizations, or other non-profit organizations which benefit the animal kingdom (Additional training or licensure may be required for some of these activities. Check local laws where you live.).

Working as an Animal Chaplain is independent work, and you will be self-employed.  You market your own services, collect your own contributions or fees, and maintain your own records.  However, other Animal Chaplains are here on this site to offer support and encouragement to you in starting your Animal Chaplain ministry or business.  We offer many free resources (see the bar on the side) and a course to help you get started.  We do this because we love animals, and we want to see the field of animal ministry grow and flourish.

If you are already an ordained member of the Clergy, becoming an Animal Chaplain is easy.   You simply add "Animal Ministry" to your existing offerings.  You can take the Animal Chaplain course to give you background information, resources and training.

If you are NOT an ordained member of the clery, you have two options.  You can take the Animal Chaplain course and receive a diploma listing your name as an "Animal Ministry Leader" in the denomination with which you currently affiliate.  Or, you can officially become an ordained member of the clergy through one of the many on-line ordination groups.  Type "get ordained" in your internet browser, and choose from the many offerings.  Many Animal Chaplains have become ordained through "Universal Ministries" and the "Universal Life Church" or similar religious organizations (No organization is associated with this website, and we cannot endorse one for you.  However, there are many to choose from.).  After you become ordained, you can take the course to become a graduate of the Animal Chaplain program.  Upon graduation from the course, you can be listed on this site as an independent interfaith Animal Chaplain.

Animal Chaplaincy is not for everyone.  It may take years to build your ministry, in order to earn enough money in contributions to make this type of work pay for itself, or to earn an income.  Many Animal Chaplains perform their animal ministry work "on the side" while employed elsewhere.  A number of Animal Chaplains are full-time wedding Officaints.  Others offer their services as volunteers, or work very "part time" as a stay-at-home parent or retired person.  Being an Animal Chaplain is not a good way to "get rich quick", however, it is emotionally, spiritually, and personally very gratifying work.

We recommend Animal Chaplains to answer these questions for themselves before embarking in this new business/ministy:

  • Do you love animals?
  • Are you a spiritual person?  (It is not necessary to be religious in the traditional sense.)
  • Do you enjoy serving others?
  • Are you willing to put the time and effort into marketing your services in your community?
  • Are you open-minded, non-judgmental, and willing to learn about the practices of numerous faith traditions?
  • Are you a good listener?
  • Are you reliable, mature, emotionally stable, and willing to accept the responsibilities inherent in beginning a new career, hobby, or volunteer position?
  • Would adding Animal Ministry to your life offer fulfillment, or augment the other things you are already doing in life?
  • Would you like to network with people who share your interests, values and concerns regarding animals and spirituality?

If you answered yes to these questions, Animal Chaplaincy may be right for you!

I Am the Voice of the Voiceless
by Poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox

I am the voice of the voiceless;
Through me the dumb shall speak,
Till a deaf world's ear,
Shall be made to hear,
The wrongs of the wordless weak.

The same force formed the sparrow,
That fashioned man, the king.
The God of the Whole,
Gave a spark of soul,
To furred and feathered thing.

And I am my brother's keeper,
And I will fight his fight,
And speak the word,
For beast and bird.
Till the world shall set things right.
